A Lovely Place To Lunch And Chill Out – Café Boterham

It’s great when you can find a café in Amsterdam that has charm as well as great
service. I found such a place just behind the University of Amsterdam on the
Wibaultstraat and across the street from the Amstedam Fashion Institute
Boterham. I caught up with the owner of this great little find to get an idea of
how it all started and what the idea was behind it.
Manon Novak is a beautiful young woman in her own right. Charming,
intelligent, creative and expecting a new arrival soon as, she is about to become a
mother. We had an opportunity to talk about how her dream of owning a café
became a reality. Originally performing in theatre for 12 years, Manon had the
idea of starting up her own café. Having gone to cafes in the past which offered
little service and food that was not great, she thought of turning her creative
talents towards horeca. She knew she wanted a small café that sat on a corner –
a small place which would serve fresh ingredients and offered great service at a
good price. As this idea began to take shape in her head, now it was finding the
location. The fact that her husband is an interior designer with his own company
known as “17 Tree” gave her an advantage – her husband created and designed
the interior with her input. The result, a mix of quiet industrial flair mixed with
vintage styling. The space is light and inviting. Throughout the café are floor to
ceiling bookcases made form recylcled material (really great for the
environment). Small articles such as vases, candleholders, little statues and such
are for sale housed within the shelves of the bookcase. The actual chairs where
you sit are also for sale, thus creating the idea of items for your home as well as a
great little café. However, her creative talent does not stop there.
She now has a new idea in which she would like to replace the articles for sale in
the bookcase with artwork created by new and upcoming artist. The idea being,
she wants to support new talent offering them the opportunity to have their
work seen and sold within the café. There is also a new idea of creating a terrace
to allow customers to enjoy good weather outside the café.
I have become a great fan of Boterham. Friendly staff as well as fresh ingredients
used and great pricing has me sold! I definitely recommend stopping by, you will
definitely find yourself going back again. I guarantee it!

“Coming from San Francisco, I moved to Amsterdam as part of following my passion to experience life in another country. Amsterdam had an appeal that I absolutely loved. That same passion lead me into interior styling. Being able to create a look for a space is the best feeling. It is a challenge at times finding exactly what works and what doesn’t, but that is all part of the journey. Being able to bring to reality a look that is special and unique is the creative process in motion. It’s what I love doing.”
